Named after the Greek God of love and son of Aphrodite, Eros was designed to embody the true DNA of the house of Versace. According to Donatella Versace, the the fragrance’s objective was to fit into the brand’s concept by depicting style and significance long-lasting design, quality and popularity.

The nose behind Eros was Aurélien Guichard who is known for works such as Gucci Pour Homme as well as Azzaro Aqua Verde. Guichard sought to create a blend that was fresh, woody and slightly oriental.

Versace Eros’ Composition

Featuring a plethora of fresh, fruity and powdery amber resins, Eros borrows elements from a number of different olfactive families. However, an oak moss and cedar base, tonka bean heart and aromatic and citrus head makes this fragrance an unusual take on the classic Aromatic Fougère.

Head Notes

Eros first opens with a fresh burst of fruity overtones followed by an aromatic backdrop. Starting with crisp green apples and ripe lemons, hints of mint soon seep in for additional freshness.

Heart Notes

• Tonka Bean
• Geranium
• Ambroxan

Very quickly, tonka bean soon reveals itself to add a sweet and earthy aspect to the head. Within moments of detecting the tonka bean, the head notes subside to bring out the ambroxan with a slight floral hint of geranium.

Ambroxan, or ambroxide, is quite similar to ambergris in that it offers a powdery muskiness to the overall aroma. Yet unlike deeper musks such as ladbanumn it’s somewhat lighter and vaguely oceanic. Paired with the tonka bean, it creates a sweet and mouthwatering accord.

Base Notes

• Vanilla
• Cedarwood
• Vetiver
• Oak Moss

Both the tonka bean and ambroxan persist as we journey into the base. Sweet and sensual vanilla is accompanied by warm vetiver whilst being contrasted against fresh cedar and oak moss. Versace officially claim that there are notes of both Atlas and Virginia cedar in the base. However, this is somewhat contrived and hard to distinguish with all the other various notes.

In fact, the cedar in itself is but small aspect of the fragrance’s rich base. The resulting scent is a tableau of gourmand and aromatic notes as well as powdery resins and wood. The overall experience is diverse, varied and yet well-woven together.

Eros’ Life-Cycle, Wake & Strength

The cascading experience of notes and accords is a rapid succession when wearing Eros. Both the head and heart will emerge and fade within mere minutes in order to reveal the base. Whilst this allows notes such as the lemon, mint, tonka bean and ambroxan to linger between phases, they’re quite short-lived.

However, this does not mean that Eros performs poorly. On the contrary, the longevity is quite enduring and will happily give you a long-lasting base through the best part of a working day. As for the projection and sillage, they perform just as well.

Whilst eh sillage provides a fair wake behind the wearer, the projection offers a robust bubble of scent when static. Overall, we were rather impressed by this little fragrance.

Do People Like Versace Eros?

As a general rule, people seemed to really enjoy Versace Eros across all ages, which was quite surprising. However, given the varied plethora of different notes, it seems that there’s something for everyone in this cologne.

For instance, the men particularly appreciated the ambroxide and oak moss characteristics. Meanwhile, the women seemed to enjoyed its more gourmand facets such as the tonka bean and vanilla. Whilst it’s quite a youthful fragrance, both older men and women seemed to like it anyway.

However, it proved to be far more popular among younger generations such as men and women around their mid-twenties. Whilst it was still enjoyed by men and women in their thirties, it was to a lesser extent.

When Should You Wear Eros?

What makes Eros a somewhat exceptional fragrance is that it performs valiantly throughout the year. Despite just a minor dip during summer due to some heavier oriental notes, it features a character that is compatible in all seasons.

For instance, aromatics work particular well in the spring whilst the more gourmand and oriental notes are perfect for both autumn and winter. Nevertheless, it can still work reasonably well during summer thanks to lighter citrus and mint notes as well as the mildly aquatic ambroxide.

As mentioned above, Eros seems to be much more popular in the 20 – 29 age range. Therefore, it’s likely to be more suited to someone in that bracket. It can also be worn at any time of the day and for a variety of occasions.

With regards to these, we would recommend it as a versatile casual fragrance that can even be worn for romantic encounters. Whilst it’s not strictly a date fragrance, it would likely work well given that the pleasant gourmand note are so well received.

Finally, Versace Eros is not overly strong in terms of masculinity. In fact, the vanilla renders it rather understated and quite mild in this regard.

Presentation and Value For Money

Versace Eros’ bottle is made from a turquoise glass that was chosen to evoke the Mediterranean Sea. The glass is detailed with a mottled effect and gold lettering as well as Versace’ Medusa logo, which can be found on the front and top.

As for the packaging, it’s a simple turquoise blue box much like the glass with the same gold lettering. This in itself is not particularly attention grabbing but the bottle is certainly nice to look at. Similarly, the atomiser performs very well and offers a light mist with a concentrated delivery.

In terms of value for money, Versace Eros is outstanding. Being an exceedingly versatile and high quality fragrance, it is available at a very attractive price.
